Any rxn in which one atom is replaced by another

Used to place halogen onto alkane’s

It replaces an H with something else

These products are a halocarbon and the acid of the halogen

Ex: hydrobromic acid

Needs UV light to initiate the rxn

Provides the high energy needed to form the excited state

Elimination Rxn’s

Any reaction in which atoms are eliminated from another molecule
