What’s the difference between Aldehydes and Ketones?

Aldehydes are generally compounds that have a scent to it

Ketones are generally industrial or home solvents

ALDEHYDES

It’s an organic compound characterized by a terminal carbonyl functional group; that is, a carbonyl group bonded to at least one H atom

Contains the C=O at the end of the carbon chain

A hydrogen is attached to the carbonyl group

Naming → change the ‘e’ in the alkane to ‘-al’

The end carbon with the “-CHO” group is considered part of the chain

Smaller aldehydes have strong, unpleasant odors, while those with higher molecular weights have pleasant flowery odors

They oxidize

Have fragrant smells

Asymmetrical
